An overwhelming run game and greedy defense led Monroe High to a 32-3 win at Sun Valley on Friday.
Junior tailback Chase Byrum rushed 29 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns and freshman QB Zeph Wall, making his first career start, had 102 yards and two TDs on six carries.
Monroe didn't have a turnover and took the ball from the Spartans three times.
Redhawks senior defensive lineman Montez Rorie picked up a fumble caused by linebacker Ashad Byrd and ran it in from 15 yards out for the final points of the game with 2:14 left in the third quarter. Rorie also had two sacks.
Wall had TD runs of 27 and 28 yards in the first half, helping his team take a 14-3 advantage into the break.
Sophomore defensive back Desmen Robinson had an interception on his own 2-yard line to thwart a Sun Valley drive in the third quarter. Sun Valley junior tailback Albert Funderburke, who entered the game averaging 205.2 rushing yards per game, was held to 102 yards on 20 carries.
The victory improved Monroe to 4-2 heading into a bye week. Sun Valley dropped to 3-3.
