Mavs, Spartans preparing to play for first

Both boys teams 4-1 heading into rematch
Jan. 31, 2013 @ 05:15 PM

The three-way tie for first place in the Southern Carolina Conference will be broken tonight when Marvin Ridge's boys travel to Sun Valley.

The Spartans are coming off their first league loss after a 4-0 start, falling to Weddington at home.

Marvin Ridge's only loss in the SCC was at home against the Spartans in overtime.

The Mavericks were coming off back-to-back double-digit losses at a holiday tournament in Charlotte when they entered league play 6-6, but have won four of five in the SCC.

Weddington plays at Anson County tonight. The Warriors, who started their current four-game winning streak at home against Anson (79-69), are one of the hottest teams in Union County.

WHS wins with sticky defense that has allowed the Warriors to hold their opponent to 53 points or less in 14 games this season.

Weddington scored just 48 points at Sun Valley, the defending league champion, but held the Spartans to 44.

Sun Valley was on a five-game winning streak before Tuesday's low-scoring loss to the Warriors.

Just three days after being the only unbeaten team in league play, the Spartans find themselves in a critical situation tonight in their quest to repeat as champions.

A win keeps the Spartans in first place, but a loss could drop them to third with just four games to play.

Redhawks' response

Monroe's boys had a chance to move into a tie for second place, but couldn't hold a fourth-quarter lead at Piedmont on Tuesday.

They don't have long to get over it.

Tonight the Redhawks play at first-place Cuthbertson, which hasn't lost to a conference opponent since 2011.

Regardless of the outcome, tonight's game will benefit both teams in the postseason.

Monroe, which won the 1A state championship in 2010, won't face a team as good as Cuthbertson in the 1A playoffs this season.

The Cavaliers needed a last-second shot to edge Monroe by one point (64-63) in the first meeting on Jan. 4.

Expect a playoff atmosphere when the Redhawks travel to Cuthbertson tonight.

CHS girls a surprise

Cuthbertson's girls have won five straight, and a home win over Monroe tonight would give the Cavs a share of first place.

The Cavs' only loss in the Rocky River Conference was to Monroe, but the game wasn't close (57-30).

Cuthbertson's girls have never won a conference title.

Pirates ripping SCC

Porter Ridge's girls are 5-0 in the league and have outscored their conference opponents by an average of 30.4 points per game.

Parkwood gets another shot at the Pirates tonight, this time at home. When the Rebels traveled to Porter Ridge on Jan. 18, they took home a 38-point loss (80-42).

Parkwood will be trying to end Porter Ridge's eight-game winning streak.

The Pirates share Union County's longest active winning streak with Cuthbertson's boys.
