Western Carolina signs Forest Hills' Poag

Cats could use him at linebacker or tight end

Western Carolina has swooped in and signed one of the best athletes in Union County.

Forest Hills High senior Roderick Poag signed a letter-of-intent on Wednesday to play football for the Catamounts starting in 2013.

Poag is listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, making him one of the biggest cornerbacks in the world.

How did he do?

Poag returned three interceptions for touchdowns as a senior, and made first-team all-Union County as a rover.

“He has great athletic ability,” said Forest Hills coach John Lowery. “He’s only played two years of football so he’s still learning the game. I think Western stole a diamond.”

The Catamounts are listing Poag as an outside linebacker, but Lowery said the coaching staff believes he could make it at several positions, including tight end, strong safety or defensive end.

“He went up there for his visit and they think he can carry another 30 or 40 pounds easy,” Lowery said. “They like his height. He has long arms and big hands and catches the ball really well.”

Poag finished with five interceptions and 30 tackles as a senior, including scoring returns of 52, 57 and 21 yards.

“He has good instincts,” Lowery said. “I believe Roderick’s best football is ahead of him.”

Poag is one of three Union County players headed to Western, along with Porter Ridge outside linebacker Avery Worsham and Sun Valley offensive lineman Jacob Cannell.

“I’m glad the other kids are going up there too,” Lowery said. “The three of them can get rides together and stuff, and they’ll be going through the same experience together with somebody from home.”
