Marvin Ridge boys inch closer to crown

Mavs down Parkwood, have inside track on SCC title
Feb. 09, 2013 @ 09:02 PM

Marvin Ridge’s boys remained in the driver’s seat for the Southern Carolina Conference boys basketball crown with a 68-56 win over visiting Parkwood on Friday.
The Mavericks can clinch at least a share of the regular-season title with a win at Porter Ridge on Tuesday, and will win the title outright if they also beat archrival Weddington at home the following Friday.
The Mavericks, now 7-1 in the SCC and 13-7 overall, got 80.9 percent of their scoring from the trip of John Emezie, Taylor Neal and David Kelcy in the win over Parkwood.
Emezie, a 6-5 junior forward, led all scorers with 25 points and also had six rebounds and three steals.
Neal, a 6-5 senior wing committed to play for Army, scored 18 points and Kelcy added 12 points.
Parkwood had three players reach double-digit scoring.
Sophomore shooter Terrell Williams made three of the Rebels’ six 3-points and finished with a team-high 11 points. Senior forward James Houston and junior guard Sam Mobley added 10 points each, while junior forward Keelyn Lee contributed seven points and a game-best eight boards.
Parkwood travels to Weddington on Monday to play a makeup game.

Pirates’ progress
Most would agree Porter Ridge’s boys have made some strides under the tutelage of first-year coach Jim Rhodes.
The Pirates broke a 32-game winless streak in the league last month that dated back to the SCC’s inception in 2009-10, and are now 2-6 in the conference heading into Tuesday’s home game against the first-place Mavericks.
Rhodes said earlier this month he feels the Pirates are getting better, but they really want an upset to hang their hats on.
They have at least two more chances to play the spoiler role —starting Tuesday at home against the Mavs, who obviously have a lot at stake, and at home again next Friday against archrival Sun Valley.
