Sun Valley’s boys are still in the hunt for the Southern Carolina Conference title, but the Spartans need a little help.
Sun Valley (13-8, 6-2 SCC), which defeated Weddington 52-33 on the road Friday, trails first-place Marvin Ridge by a game in the league standings.
The Spartans and Mavs both have two conference games remaining — SV hosts Anson County on Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season at Porter Ridge on Friday.
Marvin Ridge (13-7, 7-1 SCC) still has games at Porter Ridge (Tuesday) and at home against Weddington (Friday).
“We’re still in the thick of things,” said Sun Valley coach Keith Mason. “Our job is to win out and hope Marvin Ridge has a hiccup. They’ve got to play Weddington again and Porter Ridge, which is playing a lot better. Anything is possible. Our league is tough, even at the bottom those teams are playing pretty well.”
The Spartans turned in an impressive defensive performance on Friday.
Sun Valley held Weddington to 12 points in the first half and single digits in three of the four quarters.
The Warriors (13-9, 5-3 SCC) made just 11 field goals on the night.
“Our M-O is our defense and I thought we turned it up a couple notches,” said Mason. “We played great man-to-man (defense) and I gut-checked our guys. We wanted to eliminate our help so I told the guys they had to man up. We challenged everybody to stay on their man and limit (Weddington) to one shot.”
Three players scored in double figures, including seniors Kendall Ratliff, Kevin Saxton and Jacquez Johnson.
Ratliff and Johnson each finished with 12 points, while Saxton had 10.
Sun Valley also got eight points and 10 rebounds from senior forward Isaiah Blanchett.
“We really worked on trying to get the ball inside a little more and take better shots,” said Mason. “We just wanted to go on mini-runs. A couple runs here and there with the way our defense was playing, we thought we could enough space that we could kind of regulate how the game went.”
