Piedmont High’s girls reached the championship game of the Holy Angels Basketball Classic with a 46-34 win over Providence at Charlotte Catholic on Friday.
After a 1-4 start, Piedmont has now won three of its last four.
Junior guard Abbey Mills scored a game-high 16 points for the Panthers and also had six rebounds and five steals.
“We’re just working more as a team,” said Mills of her team’s improved play. “We’re passing the ball well and getting back on defense. It’s just all teamwork. Everyone is just working well together and it’s starting to come together.”
Junior guard Jessica Prince added 14 points, five boards and four steals and Jackie Price, a sophomore post, contributed 10 rebounds and seven points for Piedmont.
Panthers coach Phil Apple commended his team.
“We did some great things tonight,” Apple said. “We were down six or seven early and we fought our way back. We were up by as much as 10 and they fought back.
“I’m happy we won and I’m proud of our young ladies and the effort we’ve put in. We’re looking forward to (tonight) and we’ll give it our best shot.”
The Panthers (4-5) play in the title game at 4 p.m. today at Charlotte Catholic.
Piedmont led 24-22 at halftime, then held Providence to two points in the third quarter.
The Panthers were up 31-24 entering the fourth thanks to Mills’ halfcourt shot at the end of the third.
Providence cut the lead to three in the final quarter before Piedmont went on an 8-0 run to go up 40-29.
Casey Rieger led Providence (6-5 record) with 12 points, 17 rebounds, four steals and three blocks.
