Dec. 31, 2012 @ 03:24 PM

MONROE — There are no undefeated boys high school basketball teams left in Union County at the turn of the new year.

Cuthbertson and Piedmont's boys both suffered their first loss of the season over the weekend.

Cuthbertson (11-1) dropped a heartbreaking overtime decision to Hampton (Va.) in the first round of the HSOT Invitational in Raleigh last Thursday. The Cavaliers went on to win their final two games of the tournament, including a victory over Kinston, which beat CHS in last season’s 2A state championship.

CHS returns from a six-day layoff on Friday with a trip to Monroe.

Piedmont advanced to the finals of the Lee County Christmas Tournament before dropping a 55-44 decision to Durham Jordan last Saturday night.

Senior forward Brady Meggs led the Panthers with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Qualen Blakeney added 14 points.

Piedmont is now 9-1 on the year heading into Friday’s Rocky River Conference game at Central Academy.

With a 6-0 record, Monroe is the only unbeaten girls team in the county.

Parkwood’s girls won their first seven games of 2012, but were upended by Weddington in the semifinals of the CMC-NorthEast Holiday Classic last Friday.

The Rebels (8-1) went on to capture third place with a 43-42 win over A.L. Brown.

Parkwood plays at home against Weddington on Jan. 8.

Sharing the rock

With four players averaging double figures in scoring, Piedmont’s boys have the most balanced team in Union County.

Meggs leads the Panthers with an average of 18.6 points per game. Senior guard Jeremy Anthony is second at 11.7 ppg, followed by sophomore forward Cameron Tripp (11.4) and senior guard Qualen Blakeney (11.1).

Tripp leads the county in rebounding (9.8) while Blakeney is second in assists (5.1) per game.

Marvin Ridge has three players scoring at least 10 points per game, including senior wing Taylor Neal (16.5), junior forward John Emezie (16.5) and senior guard Logan Jackson (12.9).

Jackson leads UC in assists (5.8) and ranks second in steals (3.3) per game.

Odds and ends ...

... Monroe junior guard Brandon Roddy leads the county in scoring at 25.0 points per game. Cuthbertson junior point guard Shelton Mitchell ranks second at 22.2 ppg.

... Weddington sophomore guard Stephanie Watts ranks among the top 10 in the county in points (21.6, 1st), rebounds (8.5, 7th), assists (3.6, 7th), steals (5.4, 2nd) and blocks (2.5, 2nd) per game.

... Parkwood junior forward Emry Tsitouris is the only player — boys or girls — in UC averaging a double-double. Tsitouris ranks second in the county in points per game (20.6) and first in rebounds (14.0).
