Cuthbertson High's boys basketball team is now the only unbeaten within the Rocky River Conference, after flexing its muscle at second-place Piedmont on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers pulled away in the second half for a 74-61 road win over the Panthers in a matchup of teams that entered the game with a combined record of 28-2 overall and 11-0 in the league.

CHS is now 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the RRC while the Panthers dropped to 13-2 and 5-1 in the conference.

The Cavs took a six-point lead at the half (39-33) on Shelton Mitchell's 3-pointer at the buzzer, and outscored the home team 20-11 in the third quarter to pull away.

"We just kept putting pressure on them and we knew they were going to eventually wear down," said CHS senior guard Emmitt Afam. "We just try to turn up the intensity even more every quarter and it turned out good for us."

The Panthers jumped out to a 20-19 lead by the end of the opening frame, but the deficit didn't rattle the Cavs.

Cuthbertson has trailed in the second half of five games this season and its only loss was in overtime to Hampton (Va.).

"We've had a lot of close games this year and last year," said Afam. "It's always better to get that kind of experience because you know how to handle it down the road."

A Wake Forest commit, Mitchell finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Mitchell, however, went out in the third quarter with a knee injury and didn't score in the fourth.

Afam contributed 16 points and five assists for the Cavs, and senior wing Isiah Cureton had 15 points and 10 boards.

Justin Austin, a 6-3 senior, added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench.

"He kept so many possession alive," said Helms of Austin. "His motor is so high, when he plays like that he just makes us so much better because it gives us one more guy to rebound, which is a key stat for us. Justin's been that way in the big games. We just need him to do it more consistently."

Senior guard Qualen Blakeney led Piedmont with 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Brady Meggs, a senior forward, had 16 points and nine rebounds while sophomore forward Cameron Tripp contributed 12 points and eight boards.

Meggs, who entered the game averaging a team-high 17.2 points per game, was held to four points in the second half.

"We didn't make any adjustments on Meggs other than just telling the guys we had to keep him out from under the rim," said Helms. "In the first half he lived up underneath the basket."

Piedmont plays at Union Academy in a makeup game today while the Cavaliers host UA on Friday.
