Sun Valley High's boys basketball team has a much different look from last season, but the changes haven't kept the Spartans from having similar success.

After finishing 22-5 and winning the Southern Carolina Conference a year ago, Sun Valley is on track for another league title.

The Spartans pulled out a 73-68 overtime road win over Marvin Ridge on Friday to improve to 10-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference. They currently lead the Mavericks and Weddington by a game for first place in the SCC standings.

"The conference is so small, so to be in the driver's seat is huge," said Sun Valley coach Keith Mason. "If you fall behind it's tough to make up ground, but the one thing with being in the driver's seat is you have to stay in it. We have a magic number and if we hit that number then hopefully we'll reach the goals we set for ourselves."

The Spartans got productive games from a pair of frontcourt players on Friday.

Senior forward Kendall Ratliff scored a game-high 24 points while sophomore forward Hakeem Polk posted 17 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. He was also 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

Ratliff, a role player last season, leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game.

"We're just a different team after being more guard-oriented last season," said Mason. "We just try to pound it inside. Good things always happen whether they're scoring, getting fouled and going to the line or kicking it back out."

Last season the Spartans relied on standout guards Shaun Stewart and Jalen Witherspoon, who combined to average more than 40 points per game. Both are now on scholarship — Stewart at N.C. A&T and Witherspoon at Mars Hill.

"We knew we had to make a bunch of changes because we lost a lot of our top players from last year," said Polk. "We try to get the ball inside more now."

Marvin Ridge had three players stand out in Friday's loss.

Senior wing Taylor Neal, who has committed to West Point, scored a team-high 22 points for the Mavericks.

Logan Jackson, a senior guard, added 13 points and four assists while senior forward David Kelcy contributed 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Both teams return to the court on Tuesday, when Sun Valley travels to Parkwood and Marvin Ridge hosts Anson County.
