Pirates rally for eighth straight win
Porter Ridge scored three times in the top of the seventh inning for a 3-1 win over Sun Valley on Tuesday.
The Pirates, winners of eighth straight, reached Wednesday night's championship game at the Third Annual Griffin-Toxey Classic baseball tournament, being held at Piedmont High.
Porter Ridge (10-3 record) trailed 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Ryan Evans led off with a single.
After a sacrifice bunt moved Evans over, Drew Moore ripped a double to the left-field corner that plated the tying run.
Connor Simpkins delivered the game-winning RBI, knocking in Moore with a single to make it 2-1.
Cameron Mongan got the win for PR and Moore came on the seventh to earn the save.
Sun Valley (3-10) had a chance to build on its lead in the bottom of the fifth, when Luke Gill led off with a single and Kenny Palmer followed with a double to put runners on second and third. But the Spartans got nothing out of it, leaving both stranded.
Eight Spartans combined for 10 hits, with Palmer and Courtland Stoudt finishing with two each.
Michael Shouse singled in the fourth inning for SV and eventually scored on Nick Greenauer's single for the only run of the game until the seventh.
Porter Ridge will face the Piedmont-Central Cabarrus winner in Wednesday's title game at 7 p.m.
