Redhawks run past Mount Pleasant, 28-10
Chase Byrum picked up 124 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries to lead Monroe to a 28-10 victory over Mt. Pleasant, Friday night.
The Redhawks (6-2, 2-0 RRC) took a quick 7-0 lead when freshman quarterback Zeph Wall hit Jaylan Barbour on a 39-yard scoring strike with 8:28 left in the first quarter.
Two possessions later Desmen Robinson picked off Tigers (2-6, 0-2) quarterback, Austin Parker to give the Redhawks the ball at the MP 28.
Six plays later running back Tre Shun Wynn took a handoff up the middle 23 yards untouched on third and 18 for a 14-0 lead with 11:52 left in the half.
The Tigers found some momentum when running back Cody Reece scored from eight yards out with 3:12 left in the second quarter to make it 14-7.
Monroe gave the ball back on a fumble three plays later and Parker was able to hit a 45-yard field goal to cut the deficit to four with 53 seconds left in the half.
It looked like the Tigers would go in with momentum but Wynn took the ensuing kickoff 88 yards from the one to the Tigers' 11.
Byrum ran the ball twice including a five-yard touchdown run for a 21-10 halftime lead.
The Redhawks kept the ball in Byrum's hands in the second half as he successfully killed the clock with 17 carries for 87 yards.
The Tigers only had three possessions in the second half and ran just 12 plays.
Isaiah Thomas put the game away early in the fourth when he caught a wide open pass down the right sideline from 17 yards out for the final score.
