Carson's son helps Warriors hold off Piedmont
Weddington's depth made a difference in Friday's 20-14 road win over Piedmont.
The Warriors, now 3-1 in the Southern Carolina Conference and 8-2 overall, got a lot of production from senior backups Justin Carson and Shawn Dashti against the pesky Panthers.
Carson, whose Dad, Tim, is the Warriors' head coach, got the start at QB in place of senior Jeff Welch (concussion). The Warriors also got a big night from tailback Shawn Dashti, who finished with 20 carries for 128 yards.
The younger Carson completed 16-of-26 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.
Carson spread the ball around to seven different receivers, including standout Ryan Black, who caught five passes for 76 yards and a touchdown.
Carson also threw a TD pass to sophomore Lance Moore in the first half.
Weddington led 13-7 at halftime and 20-7 after three quarters.
Piedmont got on the board midway through the second quarter when senior cornerback Colton Greene picked off a deflected pass near midfield and spun out of a tackle on his way to returning it for a touchdown.
The Panthers (2-2, 7-3 overall) pulled to within 20-14 with 3:25 left when Cody Leviner caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Tripp with 3:25 to play.
The on-side kick attempt that followed didn't go 10 yards and Weddington was able to run out the final three minutes.
Weddington got field goals of 42 and 40 yards from kicker Keith Duncan in the second quarter.
