Cochran kicks three FGs in Mavs' win over Anson
Marvin Ridge's defense absorbed numerous body blows, but avoided the knockout punch Friday night.
Combined with three field goals from senior Tyler Cochran and an offense that provided just enough big plays, Marvin Ridge won its first Southern Carolina 3A Conference game of the season, beating Anson County 15-7.
The Mavericks (2-8, 1-3) led 12-0 at halftime and held firm after allowing a touchdown on Anson County's first drive in the second half.
Marvin Ridge rushed for 101 yards, 64 of which came on a reverse from freshman wide receiver Emeka Emezie, and passed for an additional 87 yards.
Of those 87 passing yards, 48 came on the opening drive, which was a 15-play, 63-yard grinder that took half the quarter. It was extended with a successful fake punt call on fourth-and-8 from the Anson 39, when Jacob Henderson completed a 15-yard pass to Cody Chadwick. Freshman quarterback Austin Colonna later connected with Justin Titgen for a 33-yard gain on third-and-24, leading to Devin Adkins punching it in from 1 yard out.
It was the only touchdown of the night for Marvin Ridge.
Meanwhile, the Bearcats (4-6, 1-3) couldn't close out drives. A 17-play sequence in the first half that last nearly eight minutes ended with a missed 27-yard field goal, and Anson later missed a 28-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
Jekev Robinson's 45-yard touchdown early in the third quarter made it 12-7, but the Bearcats never challenged again. Their next two drives ended when the Mavericks held on fourth down.
In addition to his 64-yard rush, Emezie finished with a team-high three catches for 23 yards. Colonna completed 10-of-23 passes for 72 yards.
Marvin Ridge closes out its season next week at home against Weddington. Anson County hosts Sun Valley. The Spartans are in first place in the SCC and would clinch the outright league championship with a victory.
