Redhawks reach state semis with 61-31 win

MOUNT AIRY — Monroe High was never threatened in a 30-point road win over the Bears.

The victory puts the Redhawks in the 1AA state semifinals for the first time in coach Johnny Sowell's eight-year tenure.

After a 1-3 start, Monroe has now won 10 in a row to improve to 11-3 on the season.

The Bears, who entered the game on a 12-game winning streak, finish their season 12-2.

Monroe held a 27-10 lead at halftime.

Redhawks QB Quayshawn Chambers threw a TD pass to Ashad Byrd and also ran for a 33-yard score in the first half. Tre Shun Wynn and Julius Stradford also had scoring runs in the first half.

The Redhawks will travel to Swain County next week.
