Piedmont High's boys basketball team has started the season with a 3-0 record, all against bigger schools.

The 2A Panthers earned their most impressive win yet on Friday, edging 4A Sun Valley 60-56 in overtime.

Piedmont entered the contest 0-10 against Sun Valley dating back to 2006.

Piedmont held Sun Valley without a basket for 4 minutes and 52 seconds of the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 10-6 to force overtime.

Piedmont’s Qualen Blakeney had a chance to win it in regulation, but his shot came up short, sending the game into overtime tied at 49.

With less than 20 seconds left in the extra period, Sun Valley’s Kevin Saxton drove the baseline looking to tie the game. He was met at the rim by Piedmont’s Eli Hyatt, who blocked the shot to seal the victory.

“We knew we needed to make a stop and that’s what we came to do,” said Hyatt. “Coach (Rudi Heath) talked to me in the timeout to cut baseline off. That’s what we were going for.”

Jeremy Anthony grabbed the rebound for the Panthers after Hyatt’s block. Anthony was quickly fouled and calmly put the game out of reach by knocking down two free throws.

“It’s not pressure. In my head I told myself I was going to hit them,” said Anthony. “I knew I wanted them again because I had just missed one and I wanted to make up for it. I came through for my team and I’m glad I did.”

Anthony, who finished with nine points and five rebounds on the night, missed the front end of a one and one just seconds earlier before sealing the game with eight seconds left.

“Sun Valley made some great plays,” said Heath. “That block at the end I’d rather see someone take a charge than a block, but that was good.”

Blakeney scored eight of his 19 points in the first quarter. Blakeney shared game-high scoring honors with teammate Brady Meggs, who had six points of his 19 points in the opening period. Blakeney and Meggs combined for 22 of the Panthers’ 26 points in the first half.

“I was trying to get my teammates the ball,” said Blakeney. “I was tying to feed it in the post. We have two big trees down there.”

Along with the 6-5 Meggs, the other tree is 6-5 sophomore Cameron Tripp, who had nine points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Meggs says the Panthers try to make the most of their length.

“Soon as the shot goes up, I have to be up there in front of the rim,” Meggs said. “We want to try to get at least 50 percent of the offensive rebounds. That’s our goal every night.”

Piedmont won the rebounding battle 36-27, and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds on the night.

Heath, in his first year as coach, isn’t satisfied with the 3-0 start.

“We need to improve on everything,” said Heath. “We have some pretty good teams in our conference and we have a lot of areas we need to improve on.”

Sun Valley got a team high 14 points from Kendall Ratliff while Saxton had 13 points. Daquan Moody added nine points, all in the third quarter, helping the Spartans take a 43-39 advantage into the fourth quarter. Sophomore Hakeem Polk contributed nine rebounds and six steals for the Spartans.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday, when the Panthers host Marvin Ridge and the Spartans travel to West Stanly.
