Weddington opening football season at midnight
The 2014 high school football season has officially started.
All teams across the state begin practice today in preparation for Week 1 of the regular season.
Weddington was the first Union County team on the field. The Warriors held a midnight practice after returning from a team camp on Thursday.
More than half of the UC teams are holding a morning practice session today, including Sun Valley (7:30), Marvin Ridge (7:30), Cuthbertson (8:00), Porter Ridge (8:00), Piedmont (8:00) and Parkwood (9:00).
Union Academy, which has already started classes, will take the field at 3:30 p.m. Monroe and Forest Hills will follow at 5 p.m., while Central Academy gets started at 7 p.m.
Players are restricted to practice without shoulder pads for the first two days; pads can be added on days 3-5.
The sixth day of practice, which is next Thursday, is the first time teams are allowed to engage in full contact with pads.
Scrimmage games against outside competition can begin on Aug. 11.
Five county teams are debuting new head coaches in 2014, including Central Academy (Phil Smith), Marvin Ridge (Brad Hoover), Porter Ridge ( Zach Bevilacqua), Sun Valley (Tad Baucom) and Union Academy (Robert Forshee).
Sun Valley will be the first county team to play a regular season game. The Spartans take on Hough on Aug. 21, a Thursday, at Memorial Stadium as part of the CharlottePreps.TV Kickoff Night.
The rest of the county begins the regular season on Aug. 22.
The Week 1 schedule includes: Parkwood at Cuthbertson, Lexington at Monroe, Hickory Ridge at Piedmont, Anson at Forest Hills, West Montgomery at Marvin Ridge, Carolina Pride at Union Academy, Weddington at Ardrey Kell, Porter Ridge at Mount Tabor and Central Academy at North Stanly.
