Sophomore sensation makes eight 3-pointers

Just a sophomore, Stephanie Watts is already establishing herself as one of the top high school basketball players in the state.

The Weddington High guard set a Union County record by scoring a career-high 50 points in Friday’s 83-57 home win over Cuthbertson.

Watts made 19 total field goals, including eight from behind the 3-point line, and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

“I think she showed how diverse of a player she is,” said WHS coach Ryun Cook. “When she has it going on inside and out like she did (Friday), she’s just almost impossible to defend.”

Watts scored 17 in the first, eight in the second, 15 in the third and 10 in the fourth.

“I wasn’t keeping track, but Coach Cook told me,” said Watts. “After I came out of the game in the fourth quarter, he was like ‘hey you scored 50’.”

Sanford High’s Shea Ralph holds the state’s single-game scoring record, according to the NCHSAA. Ralph scored 61 points in a 103-39 win over Pine Forest in 1996.

Watts, who has scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, UNC Charlotte and Georgia Tech, is now averaging 30 points for the 2-1 Warriors.

Watts scored 20 in each of her team’s first two road games, but was a combined 3-for-23 from 3-point range.

On Friday, Watts was 8-of-15 from beyond the arc.

“To start the season out she hadn’t really found her outside shooting touch,” said Cook. “We kind of give her a hard time because we say that she plays better on the road. I guess (Friday) she showed she can do the same thing at home.”

CHS boys still perfect

Cuthbertson’s boys improved to 4-0 on the season with a 62-47 road victory over Weddington on Friday.

The Cavaliers have won all four of their games by double digits, but Friday’s contest wasn’t as easy as the 15-point margin might suggest.

CHS jumped out to a 17-6 lead by the end of the first quarter, but with starting guards Shelton Mitchell and Emmitt Afam on the bench in foul trouble the entire second frame, the Warriors (0-3) rallied to take a 26-25 lead at the half.

Cuthbertson responded by outscoring the home team 22-8 in the third to take control and was never threatened in the fourth. Mitchell, a junior, finished with a a game-high 21 points. Senior forward Lucuis McMillon added 13 points while senior forward Isaiah Cureton contributed 11.

Weddington got a team-high 18 points from junior wing Brandon Watts, and sophomore guard Jordan Barber added 10 points.

Watts is averaging a team-best 14.3 points on the season.

Odds and ends ...

... Both boys teams struggled from the foul line on Friday. The Warriors were 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) while the Cavaliers finished just 15-of-30 (50 percent).

... Cuthbertson sophomore guard Mara Arnold made five 3-pointers on her way to 15 points on Friday, and has now made eight 3-pointers in four games.

... Cavs sophomore guard Taylor Helms matched Arnold with a team-high 15 points. Helms has scored 15 or more in three of Cuthbertson’s four games and ranks second on the team with an average of 14.0 ppg. Morgan Carlson, a junior forward who scored 12 on Friday, averages a team-best 14.5 ppg.
