Perfect Piedmont preparing to play 3-1 Mavs

Marvin Ridge has won three straight since opening loss

MONROE — After a lopsided loss to start the 2012-13 season, Marvin Ridge High’s boys basketball team has responded with three straight victories.
The Mavericks by 40 points to Ardrey Kell (84-44) in their season-opener on Nov. 19, but have since recorded wins over Country Day (73-61), Nation’s Ford (80-64) and Central Cabarrus (66-45).
Junior forward John Emezie is averaging 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game to lead Marvin Ridge.
Taylor Neal, a senior forward who has committed to West Point, is averaging 15.3 ppg. The Mavs are also getting 13.8 points and 6.3 assists per game from senior guard Logan Jackson.
Emezie, Neal and Jackson are all returning starters from last year’s team.
Marvin Ridge has a road test today at Piedmont, which is off to a 3-0 start.
The Panthers have four starters averaging doubles figures, including senior forward Brady Meggs (15.3), sophomore forward Cameron Tripp (13.0), senior guard Jeremy Anthony (13.0) and senior guard Qualen Blakeney (11.7).

Pirates, Rebels unbeaten
Porter Ridge and Parkwood’s girls are both 2-0 and have yet to be tested so far this season.
The Pirates, who shared the SCC regular season title with Anson last year, have wins over Central Academy (62-34) and Providence (77-23).
Porter Ridge plays at Central Cabarrus today before hosting Ardrey Kell on Friday.
Parkwood has started the season with wins over Cuthbertson (66-44) and Piedmont (71-38).
Rebels junior forward Emry Tsitouris is averaging 24.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She ranks second in Union County in both categories.
Parkwood is also getting 15.5 ppg from sophomore guard Lauren Brown.
The Rebels play at home against Country Day on Wednesday.

Odds and ends ...
... Cuthbertson junior point guard Shelton Mitchell leads all Union County boys players in scoring at 20.5 ppg, while Sun Valley senior forward Kendall Ratliff is second at 17.3 ppg.
... Weddington junior Brandon Watts, a 6-foot-4 forward, leads UC with an average of 2.3 blocks per game. He had five rejections in last Friday’s loss to Cuthbertson.
... Morgan Carlson, a junior at Cuthbertson, ranks among the top eight in the county in points (14.5), rebounds (9.0), assists (5.0) and blocks (2.0) per game.
