Pirates rally from halftime deficit to win girls SCC tourney
After trailing by eight at halftime, Porter Ridge's girls rallied to defeat Weddington 55-42 in the championship game of the Southern Carolina Conference tournament on Friday at Sun Valley High.
The Pirates improved their record to 22-3 on the season with their 17th straight victory, while the Warriors fell to 20-6.
Porter Ridge not only won the tournament, but went 10-0 in the regular season.
"It's the first time we've won the conference outright," said Pirates coach Ina Thompson. "Going 10-0 was a goal of us. I't s a milestone and now we're ready for next week (the playoffs)."
Senior forward Jada Huntley scored 18 points to lead Porter Ridge, and senior guard Jasmine Huntley scored 13 of her 14 points in the second half. Forward Bobbie Jones added seven points and 10 rebounds for PR.
The Pirates trailed 23-15 at halftime but outscored Weddington 18-4 in the third quarter and 22-15 in the fourth.
Porter Ridge took a 24-23 lead midway through the third quarter and never trailed again.
Weddington, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, got 13 points and 12 rebounds from Stephanie Watts and eight points from Kelsie Croal.
Just a sophomore, Watts eclipsed 1,000 career points in the first half.
Both teams will be at home when the state playoffs begin on Monday.
