Monroe boys whip East by 20, reach second round

Feb. 25, 2013 @ 09:51 PM

The Monroe Redhawks sprinted out to a 24-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a 64-44 victory over East Montgomery in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.
The third-seed Redhawks (22-4) found little resistance from the 14th-seeded Eagles (12-14) in the first half as they built a 41-22 lead at the break.
Redhawk junior guard Brandon Roddy scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half and finished the game with five three-pointers.
Senior guard Dikembe White added 15 points and forward Quay Chambers added 14 for Monroe.
Monroe coach Johnny Sowell wasn't pleased with the way his team looked after halftime.
"It was a typical Monday for us, is the way we played," Sowell said. "We didn't go out with enough intensity."
After defeating Cuthbertson 56-52 Friday night for the Rocky River Conference tournament championship, Sowell felt his team let their play drop off far too much.
"You just got finished winning the conference tournament. You need to play like that the next time you go out on the floor," Sowell said. "We didn't do that. We don't look at the what the score was, we look at our kids because we know what they our capable of doing. We looked like a typical Monday night basketball game.
Silly is what it was. They won't be silly tomorrow."
Tre Shun Wynn finished with seven points, six assists and eight steals for the Redhawks.
The Redhawks will be at home on Wednesday.
