Piedmont boys march on with 30-point win

Panthers use size to overwhelm Starmount

Piedmont High advanced to the second round of the 2A boys basketball playoffs by smashing Starmount 66-36 on Monday.
The Panthers, now 21-5 on the year, ended the first quarter with a 10-0 run that put them ahead 27-10.
Piedmont senior guard Qualen Blakeney had a dominant first quarter with seven points, five steals and four assists, and teammate Brady Meggs had eight points and three rebounds in the opening period.
The Panthers shared well in the first quarter with eight assists on 12 baskets, and all five starters scored.
Eli Hyatt had seven points off the bench in the second quarter, when Piedmont outscored the visitors 15-4. Hyatt, a 6-3 junior forward, scored 11 of the Panthers’ 19 bench points and three blocks.
The Panthers’ frontcourt rotation combined to score 43 points, which was 65.2 percent of the offense.
Piedmont was up 42-14 at halftime, and led by 37 points (56-19) when the the starters checked out for good with 1:53 left in the third quarter.
Sophomore Cameron Tripp, a 6-6 forward, had a double-double midway through the third quarter and finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three assists.
Meggs, a 6-5 senior center, finished with a game-high 18 points, including 10 in less than six minutes of the third quarter.
Piedmont, the seventh seed, will play at second-seeded Central Davidson on Wednesday. The Spartans are 22-3 after their 70-60 win over Salisbury.
Starmount, which doesn’t list a player on the roster taller than 6-1, got a team-high 12 points from Zach Worley. The Rams, out of the Mountain Valley Conference, conclude their season with a 9-17 record.
