Weddington High's boys basketball team exploded for 32 points in the fourth quarter to turn a 45-37 deficit into a 69-61 victory over Carson High in the first round of the 3A state playoffs on Monday.
The Warriors (15-12) were down 32-23 at the half when coach Gary Ellington decided to question his players' will to win.
"I just asked them if they were ready to go home, the season to be over with and we would go on to the next season," Ellington said. "I said we could get back into the game and whoever plays the hardest will win."
The Warriors fell behind by 14 points in the third, and Ellington made some changes for the fourth quarter that obviously paid huge dividends.
WHS outscored the home team 32-16 in the final quarter.
"We went away from our ball screen offense and ran our motion offense to get the ball close, 15 foot in," Ellington said of the adjustment. "They got real comfortable with our ball screens and when we made the change it threw them off. We started to get easy shots and most importantly we made our free throws (14-of-17 in the fourth quarter)."
Brandon Watts led the Warriors with 21 points, followed by Chris Trevisan with 17 and Blake Waud with 12.
Waud was an catalyst in the decisive fourth quarter, when he scored nine points.
"He got some offensive rebounds and put them back in; they were playing off him and he took advantage," Ellington said. "Our guards penetrated and when his man helped off he got some easy put backs."
The Warriors, seeded ninth, play at Concord in the second round on Wednesday.
