Shelton Mitchell scored 16 points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and finished with 25 points and seven assists as Cuthbertson cruised into the third round of the 2A boys basketball playoffs with an 83-41 home win over Lexington on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers, seeded No. 1 in the Midwest Region, are now 26-3 on the season.

Cuthbertson trailed 14-7 after a sluggish first quarter, but outscored the visitors 24-3 in the second quarter to take a 31-17 lead into halftime.

The Cavs led by 19 entering the third quarter, then outscored the 11-17 Yellow Jackets 36-13 in the fourth.

Senior wing Isaiah Cureton had a productive day for CHS with 12 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, three blocks and three assists.

Cuthbertson also got 11 points and five rebounds from senior guard Emmitt Afam, and teammate Cornelius Stradford added eight points and six boards.

The Cavs host fifth-seeded West Stokes (23-6) on Friday in a 7:30 p.m. start.

Carlson’s triple-double lifts Cavs

Morgan Carlson’s triple-double helped take Cuthbertson’s girls to new heights for the second time this week.

Carlson, a 5-11 junior forward, finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks in the fourth-seeded Cavaliers’ 56-43 win over fifth-seeded West Wilkes in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

Before this season, CHS had never won a playoff game in girls basketball.

Now the Cavs will play at home again on Friday in the third round because eighth-seeded East Davidson (19-9) upset top-seeded High Point Andrews (25-2) on Wednesday.

Carlson, who has averaged a double-double this season, said the Cavs had to how physical the game was.

“At first we were kind of shaken up about it but when we have those games we respond really well and we gave it back to them,” Carlson said. “We’re not as scrappy as they were but we kept our composure.”

Taylor Helms had nine of her 11 points in the first quarter for Cuthbertson, helping the Cavs build a 22-14 lead heading into the second.

Cuthbertson’s girls are now 18-10 on the season.
