Mount Airy High's girls basketball team overcame an early double-digit deficit to upset Monroe 63-56 in the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
The No. 1 seed Redhawks (25-2) jumped out to a 22-9 lead by the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to Asha Jordan's 15 points.
But the ninth-seeded Bears (15-11) responded by outscoring Monroe 18-4 in the second frame to take a one-point lead at the half.
Mount Airy held the lead for most of the second half until Monroe's Yasmine Thomas gave her team its last lead at 52-51 with 3:55 left, but Mount Airy ended the game on a 12-4 run.
Jordan scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Redhawks, who also got 17 rebounds and 15 points from sophomore forward Zasha Barrett.
Three players scored in double figures for the Bears, including Alex Atkins, who dropped a team-high 16 points.
Mikayla Seivers added 11 points for Mount Airy, which also got 10 points and eight rebounds from Symone Simmons.
Mount Airy plays either Bishop McGuinness or Winston-Salem Prep in the third round on Friday.
