The boys and girls basketball teams at Monroe High have solidified themselves as state title contenders in the 1A classification.

Monroe’s boys, who have won four straight, are 11-3 overall and ranked sixth in the latest 1A state poll by ncpreps.com.

Monroe’s girls are also ranked sixth after compiling a 13-1 record. Their only loss was a 47-42 decision to 4A Porter Ridge on Jan. 2.

The Redhawks are atop the Rocky River Conference standings with a 7-0 mark.

Three other teams from Union County are ranked in the state.

Cuthbertson (16-1) is No. 1 in the 2A poll while Piedmont (13-2) is sixth.

The Cavaliers defeated the Panthers 74-61 in the first of their two meetings this past Tuesday. They meet again at CHS in the regular season finale on Feb. 15.

Weddington’s girls cracked the rankings for the first time this season at the No. 10 spot in the 3A poll.

The Warriors (14-4) have won 11 of their last 12 and three of their four losses are to 4A teams.

Block party

A 6-foot-3 wing with long arms, Weddington junior Brandon Watts is the top shot blocker in Union County.

Watts averages 2.9 rejections per game. The next closest shot blocker in UC is Marvin Ridge junior John Emezie, who averages 1.7 per game.

Watts has had two ore more blocks in 16 of the Warriors’ 18 games this season, including a career-high seven in a win over Hickory Ridge on Dec. 11. He also leads the team in scoring at 12.9 ppg.

Watts and the Warriors were scheduled to host Parkwood tonight, but all Union County events have been postponed this weekend in anticipation of freezing weather.

Odds and ends ...

... Marvin Ridge senior guard Logan Jackson had a season-high 12 assists in last Tuesday’s home win over Anson County. Jackson is averaging 5.1 assists per game for the Mavericks, who play at Porter Ridge tonight.

... Piedmont senior guard Jeremy Anthony is shooting 58 percent (14-for-24) from the 3-point line this season.

... Cuthbertson junior guard Shelton Mitchell is 89-of-98 (90.8 percent) from the free throw line this season. He hasn’t missed a free throw in the Cavs’ last five games, going 24-for-24 during that stretch.
