Piedmont High football player Nathan Burgess got out of the hospital in Charlotte on Friday but "won't be back in school for a while" while he continues to heal from a ruptured kidney and a collapsed lung suffered against Anson County. Burgess has a goal of attending his Senior Night on Nov. 7.
Cam Newton completed just 35.7 percent of his passes in Carolina's Thursday night loss to the Saints. "I think this time off is going to allow all of us, including myself, to do some self scouting," Newton said.
Sun Valley's football game at Cuthbertson was delayed due to lightning on Friday and will resume on Monday at 7 p.m. The game was scoreless with 9:01 left in the first quarter when the stadium was cleared for safety reasons. Piedmont High senior football player Nathan Burgess spent four nights in the Intensive Care Unit at Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte and has now been hospitalized there for a week. Burgess suffered a collapsed lung and a lacerated kidney from a hit to the lower back while playing on the offensive.
Weddington improved to 8-1 on the season witth an impressive 34-0 road win over Sun Valley. The Warriors' defense had seven sacks and three takeaways in their second shutout of the season. Other scores involving Union County include:
