Porter Ridge High's boys basketball team has only won one game this season, but the Pirates are much more competitive under first-year coach Jim Rhodes.

Porter Ridge (1-3) has lost all three of its games by single digits, including Friday's 64-55 decision to unbeaten Ardrey Kell.
The Pirates' other two losses were to Central Academy (57-54) and Independence (71-66).
"I really think we're playing hard and playing pretty good defense, and that may end up being our calling card," said Rhodes. "We've been in every game that we've played so far and that shows that our guys are tough and fighting every possession."
The Pirates have struggled in recent seasons, including last year, when they finished with a 3-19 record.
Since the start of the 2009-10 season, Porter Ridge is 0-30 in Southern Carolina Conference games.
"We try not to talk about what happened last year and what went on," said Rhodes. "What I've seen from when I first started working with the team over the summer is our defense has gotten much better. Our cohesiveness has gotten better. I've heard a little bit that our guys aren't tough and things like that, but that's totally not true."
The Pirates got a big lift from senior Harrison Rivers on Friday.
A 6-foot-5 center, Rivers had a team-high 21 points.
Rivers had two dunks, including a one-handed jam in traffic on a fast break in the third quarter.
"He's really lanky, he's really coachable, he's got a great attitude and he's got a big motor," said Rhodes of Rivers. "It's funny because he's so long and he's almost got sneaky hops. You don't know when it's going to come and then all of a sudden, boom, he's up at the rim."
Senior guard Dallas Austin added 11 points and four rebounds for the Pirates on Friday.
Porter Ridge also got eight rebounds, five points and four assists from sophomore guard Frank Anthony.
The Pirates host Monroe on Wednesday.
