Rebels have something to build on

Parkwood boys get first win under new coach

Christmas will be a little more enjoyable for the boys basketball players at Parkwood High after the Rebels earned their first win of the season on Wednesday.
The Rebels (1-5) started strong and never let up in a 51-40 home win over Central Academy.
“It’s big for our kids, they’re working hard in practice,” said first-year coach Jeff LaFave. “It’s a big win for them and for me because they’ve worked hard enough to deserve some wins, we just haven’t been good enough on the floor. Their effort has been great, their attitude’s been good, we’ve just had a tough schedule.”
The Cougars (4-5) were coming off a 70-64 overtime victory over Forest Hills on Tuesday night — the same Forest Hills team that defeated Parkwood by 20 points (75-55) on Dec. 11.
Junior center Matt Williams and senior forward James Houston were key contributors to the win. Williams had 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block, while Houston led all rebounders with 14 and scored nine points.
The Rebels got scoring from 11 different players.
Parkwood has seven days between games before taking part in the Cox Mill tournament in Concord starting Dec. 27.
The Rebels will practice today, then take four days off for Christmas before practicing again next Wednesday.
LaFave says he’s seen improvement, but needs to see less unforced turnovers.
“We have to be strong with the ball, and at times that has kind of been our challenge,” he said. “When we don’t play well, and we don’t have a chance to win, it’s when we give the ball to the other team a lot. We’ve done that early in the season. ... We have some guys out there who don’t have a ton of experience, certainly not together with a new coach. We’re learning as we go so our practice time is very valuable right now because we don’t have an established system where the kids know what is expected.
“We’re kind of feeling each other out, getting people in roles. If we can continue to work toward who does what well, hopefully we continue to improve and we see where we’re at in January.”
