Former Piedmont star hits two homers for 49ers
Former Piedmont High star Brad Elwood is evolving into one of the Charlotte 49ers' top baseball players.
The sophomore second baseman hit two home runs and a double for Charlotte in a 14-4 home win over Siena on Sunday, and finished 4-for-6 with three RBI.
Elwood (5-9, 171 pounds) pulled his batting average up to .408 and helped his team improve to 14-5 heading into today's game at Duke (6:00).
A four-year starter at Piedmont, Elwood set the state high school record for doubles in a season with 25 in 2010. He still holds two state records, according to NCHSAA.org, including doubles for a career (45 from 2008-11).
Elwood has 15 RBI through 19 games this season, and has struck out just twice in 71 at bats — easily the lowest Charlotte's among starters.
Union County has two former standouts starting for the 49ers, including senior third baseman Shane Basen (6-2, 187), a Marvin Ridge High graduate.
Basen, an academic all-American last season, ranks third on the team in battling (.358) and second in RBI (17) and runs scored (17).
