After two tough losses in the last week against Cuthbertson and Piedmont, the Monroe Redhawks bounced back by cruising past Union Academy 64-26 on Friday night.

The win moves the Redhawks to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the RRC.

“Those two games they lost are close games,” said Monroe coach Johnny Sowell, who recorded the 400th win of his career. “We have to find a way of finishing. They are not there yet because it takes this bunch a long time to get back because we went so far in football, but it's coming.”

Monroe was up 4-3 early in the first before going on a 14-4 run to end the quarter. After giving up seven first quarter points, the Redhawks outscored the Cardinals 36-9 in the second and third quarter combined (18-4, 18-5).

“We were getting in a groove,” said Sowell. “We wanted to move the ball up and down the floor…and they started feeling good about the defense.”

Leading the way for the Redhawks was Brandon Roddy, who finished with a game-high 17 points, and Quayshawn Chambers, who scored 16.

Roddy and Chambers each had six rebounds while Roddy also had six steals.

Also scoring in double figures was senior Gary Parker, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half.

“I just tried to be myself and play like I know how to play,” said Parker. “I let the game come to me.”

For Sowell, he was glad to see Parker pick his game up in the second half.

“He started slow, but he brings us great defense,” said Sowell. “We told him to just relax … once he settled in he was fine. He is a great player for us.”

Tre’Shun Wynn was also a key contributor for the Redhawks with nine rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

Colin Whitaker led the way for Union Academy with nine points, and Andrew Guillot scored seven off the bench. Ben Killion added five points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Monroe will be back in action on Friday as they will travel to Central Academy.
