Cuthbertson High has a chance to four-peat in the Rocky River Conference baseball tournament after eliminating host West Stanly 2-0 on Thursday.
The second-seeded Cavaliers, who batted in the bottom half because the Colts were a lower seed (third), got a complete-game shutout from senior lefty Nick Contafio.
The Charleston Southern signee improved his record to 6-1.
The victory gives the Cavaliers (16-6 record) a third chance to defeat regular-season champion Piedmont when the two meet in the RRC title game at 7 p.m. on Friday in West Stanly High's stadium.
Cuthbertson, a fourth-year school, has never lost a game in the RRC tournament, improving to 11-0 lifetime on Thursday.
CHS senior center fielder Drake Zupcic, who has signed with Appalachian State, led off the fourth inning with a double down the left-field line.
Sophomore third baseman Bailey Connell laid a bunt down the third-base line that was meant to be a sacrifice but turned into a base hit, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
DH Brandon Fallick scored Zupcic with the decisive run by lifting an RBI sacrifice fly to deep right field.
The Cavs, who handled Union Academy 13-0 in the first round, added a run in unorthodox fashion in the bottom of the fifth.
After second baseman Brandon Delay reached on a single to left, first baseman Will Fussy moved him over with a sacrifice grounder.
Delay took third on Austin Pierce's groundout, and after catcher Austin Zaretsky drew a walk, Delay stole home on a double steal.
West Stanly pitcher Zack Brown stumbled as he threw the ball home on the Delay's steal and the ball was well over the catcher's head.
In 11 of their 16 wins this season, the Cavaliers have held their opponent to one run or less — including six shutouts.
Cuthbertson defeated West Stanly for the third time this season, holding the Colts to two total runs in 21 innings and dropping their record to 12-12.
