Knights end Piedmont's 19-game win streak
Charlotte Christian rallied past Piedmont in a 14-7 road win that ended the Panthers' 19-game winning streak on Wednesday.
The Knights, who won the school's 11th private school state championship in 2012, scored seven runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Piedmont (19-2) led 3-1 after three innings, but Christian crossed the plate five times in the fourth — including a grand slam by senior third baseman Matt Simmons.
The Panthers tied the game in the fifth, scoring three times on three hits and a walk. Colby Barnette led off the inning with a single, Nigel Hester drew a one-out walk and Austin Harding yanked a double to right-center that scored Barnette. Hester cut the lead to 6-5 when he scored on a wild pitch, and left fielder Colton Green tied it up with an RBI single.
Reece Hampton scored the winning run for the Knights (20-4) in the sixth inning after drawing a one-out walk, stealing second and then coming home on Nick Owens' single.
Christian blew the game open in the seventh with five hits, including two doubles, a triple and catcher Garrett Bradbury's two-run homer.
Simmons — the son of Catholic coach Greg Simmons, who won his 500th game last week — was 2-for-4 with five RBIs.
Barnette led the Panthers at the plate, going 3-for-4. Harding got on base in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-3 while drawing a walk and reaching on an error.
Piedmont is 11-0 in the Rocky River Conference heading into Friday's game at Cuthbertson (4:30 p.m.), but the Cavaliers still have a chance to earn a co-championship.
