Price leads Panthers past North Stanly
Sophomore forward Jackie Price scored 20 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to lead Piedmont High’s girls to a 64-55 home win over North Stanly on Thursday.
The Panthers improved to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in the Rocky River Conference while the Comets fell to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in league play. The two teams are tied for fourth place in the RRC standings.
North Stanly won the first meeting against Piedmont (71-65) on Dec. 18.
Leading 33-28 at the half, Piedmont used a 9-0 run to start the third quarter. Price had six points in the run.
North Stanly never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
Panthers junior guard Jessica Prince added 18 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. Prince also added five assists.
Abbey Mills, a junior guard, scored 11 of her 16 points in the first quarter for Piedmont. She also had a game-high six assists.
Senior forward Sarah Wylie contributed 11 rebounds for the Panthers, who outrebounded the Comets 44-18 on the night.
Gentry Grubb paced North Stanly with 20 points and four assists. The Comets also got 18 points from Jenni Speight.
Piedmont plays at Central Academy today.
The Panthers won the first meeting with the Cougars 53-43 back on Jan. 4.
Piedmont boys now 16-2
Piedmont High's boys cruised to a 67-47 home victory over North Stanly on Thursday.
The Panthers improved to 16-2 overall and 8-1 in the Rocky River Conference, while the Comets fell to 4-14 overall and 1-8 in league play.
Piedmont senior forward Brady Meggs led all scorers with 22 points.
The Panthers also got eight points and seven rebounds from sophomore forward Cameron Tripp.
Senior guard Qualen Blakeney added a game-high eight assists and six points for Piedmont, which led 40-22 at the half.
The Panthers play at Central Academy today.
