Matt Wogan is the most decorated high school football player in Union County’s 52-year modern history.
A senior who started at kicker, punter and receiver as a senior at Porter Ridge High, Wogan is the first Parade All-America in county history.
Wogan was one of 26 players on the honorary team, and North Carolina’s only representative.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Wogan was also named first-team all-American by USA Today. Former Forest Hills defensive tackle Marquee Hall is the only other Union County football player to make USA Today all-American. Hall, who went on to play for South Carolina, made second-team all-American.
A two-time all-state selection, Wogan is also the winningest football player in county history. He is the only senior who participated in all 57 of Porter Ridge’s football games over the last four years, and the Pirates won 47 of them — a winning percentage of 82.5.
Wogan set a county record with 11 made field goals in 2012, and his career-best 58-yarder was also a UC record.
Wogan will sign with powerhouse Oregon Wednesday morning. He’s expected to kick as a freshman, and will also compete for the starting job as a punter.
He averaged 44.0 yards per punt as a senior, including a 72-yarder and a 68-yarder.
