ROUGHEDGE — Parkwood High’s wrestling team had a good showing on Saturday, going 4-1 as a team and placing second out of seven teams at the Parkwood Duals.
Hickory Ridge took home the championship, going 5-0 on the day.
The Rebels, now 19-17 on the season, suffered their of the day came at the hands of the Ragin’ Bulls (48-36) but secured a winning season with a 4-1 record on the day.
Concord also went 4-1 on the day, but the Rebels took second by virtue of their 39-34 victory over the Spiders.
Parkwood fell short of making the 3A playoffs this season.
“It’s one of those things where we fell short against Marvin Ridge, we fell short against Weddington, we beat Anson and we still have Sun Valley left,” Rebels coach Eric Rees said. “I told the guys our hopes for the playoffs are done but we need to start working toward individual stuff and we need to take every match for what its worth. We did a good job of doing that today. We still have some holes in our line up. If we can take care of those I think we can compete with pretty much everybody on the 2A/3A level.”
After facing the Spartans on Wednesday, the Rebels will compete in the Southern Carolina Conference tournament at Anson on Saturday.
“My kids are excited to get to the individual part of the season,” Rees said. “I have to keep their eye on the prize because Sun Valley comes in here on Wednesday and they might put a hurting to us. We have to continue to build toward the future.”
Marvin Ridge finished fourth at the tournament with a 3-2 record, falling to Hickory Ridge and Concord.
The Mavericks (8-19) have wrestled an incredibly tough schedule that left them needing to get it done in conference play to make the playoffs.
Cuthbertson finished fifth, getting its only win of the day in its final match against Butler., while Union Academy couldn’t get into the win column.
Marvin Ridge is at Anson on Wednesday at 6:00.
Cuthbertson will wrestle it’s final dual team match of the season at Central Cabarrus today.
The Rocky River Conference tournament is at West Stanly on Saturday.
