Dozens of high school athletes across Union County will sign a letter-of-intent today, binding them to a scholarship with the college of their choice.

Sun Valley High gets started the earliest with two signees who helped the Spartans’ football team reach the 4A state quarterfinals the last two seasons.

Lefty quarterback Kevin Saxton is signing with Appalachian State, and offensive lineman Jacob Cannell will become his college rival after signing with Western Carolina, according to coach Scott Stein. Both players made first-team all-Union County as seniors.

Saxton (6-3, 175 pounds) threw for a county-high 1,749 yards in the regular season, and was 27-of-35 for 390 yards and three touchdowns in a second-round playoff win over South Caldwell.

Cannell (6-3, 295) was credited with 48 pancakes and allowed just one sack as a senior.

Monroe AD Tim Niedermeier reports three football signees this morning (9:45 a.m.) and Porter Ridge has a county-high four signees starting at the same time, according to AD Bill Rogers.

Weddington will hold an 8:30 a.m. signing for cross country runners Matt Burns and Mallary Price — both are inking with Appalachian State, according to WHS athletic director Tom Schwartz.

Marvin Ridge girls soccer player Madison Martin will sign with Air Force today and Kendon Corbett will sign with Wingate University for cross country and track, Mavs AD Kevin Allran reports.

Union Academy is having a 9:30 a.m. signing today, and Cuthbertson is also having a signing day (details were not available).

No other college signings were reported for today, but others are expected to follow.
