Porter Ridge girls edge WHS in overtime
Porter Ridge's girls all but locked up the Southern Carolina Conference title with a thrilling 51-48 overtime road win at Weddington on Tuesday.
The Pirates (16-3, 7-0 SCC) now lead the second-place Warriors (16-5, 5-2 SCC) by two games in the league standings with just three games remaining.
Porter Ridge can clinch a share of the SCC regular season title with a victory at Anson County on Friday.
The Pirates led by three late in regulation when Warriors senior guard Kelsie Croal banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing to tie it with 15 seconds left.
PR senior Jada Huntley had a chance at a game-winner on the other end, but her triple from the right corner missed in the final seconds, sending the game to OT.
The Pirates took a four-point lead with 10 seconds left in the extra session after a pair of free throws by senior guard Jasmine Huntley, but Weddington sophomore Stephanie Watts answered on the other end by banking in a 3-pointer from 25 feet to cut the lead to 49-48 with 3.5 seconds remaining.
Huntley then knocked down two more free throws on the other end and the Warriors never got another shot off.
Jada Huntley led all scorers with 22 points, while Jasmine Huntley finished with 16 points and four assists for the Pirates.
Watts paced Weddington with 20 points, including 16 in the second half. She also had 11 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
Freshman guard Jada Craig added eight points and eight rebounds for the Warriors, who host Sun Valley on Friday.
