Union Academy running back Rasheed Rushing signed his letter-of-intent to play at Elizabeth City State University on Wednesday.

The Cardinals have leaned on Rushing throughout his four years on campus, which coincided with the first four years of the varisty program’s existence.

Rushing was dominant his senior year, carrying 174 times for 1,596 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Rushing found a match when he got to Elizabeth City State and is happy to know he has security for the next four years.

“It feels good,” he said. “It’s a blessing. It was one of my lifetime goals and it feels good to achieve it. I just liked the atmosphere and the team chemistry. They like my vision and my athletic ability.”

The Cardinals went to the playoffs all four years of Rushing’s career and won their first round game each of the past two seasons.

Rushing joins an Elizabeth City State program that finished with an 8-4 record last season, including 6-1 in CIAA play.

The Vikings fell to Division II national runner-up Winston-Salem State in the CIAA championship game, but ended the year on a high note with a 28-13 victory over Tuskegee in Pioneer Bowl XIV.

Rushing knows he has to be focused and prepared to play when he hits the campus but his prioities are set.

“School-wise I’m just going to go out and worry about getting my education first,” Rushing said. “I’m not worried about the position. If I can get a starting job, I’m going to go out and fight for it.

“Whatever gaps or holes they have in the team, I’ll fill that. I’m a good enough player to fill them up.”

Rushing will be joining former Cardinals teammate Tyree Drakeford, who was a freshman running back for the Vikings in 2012.

Rushing plans to major in either business or physical therapy at ECSU.
