Porter Ridge boys stun first-place Mavs

Pirates get win they can 'hang their hat on'

Marvin Ridge High's boys basketball team could have clinched a share of the Southern Carolina Conference title with a win over Porter Ridge on Tuesday, but the Pirates had other plans.
Porter Ridge held off a late rally by the Mavericks to claim a 70-63 home win over the first-place team in the league.
The Pirates, who are in fifth place in the SCC, improved to 7-15 overall and 3-6 in the conference. Marvin Ridge fell to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.
"We've been talking about getting an upset victory for a while now," said Porter Ridge coach Jim Rhodes. "We've been close a couple times and our guys were really hungry (Tuesday). We wanted to get a win that we could hang our hat on, and it doesn't get much better than beating the No. 1 team in the conference."
Before this season, the Pirates were 0-30 all-time within the SCC. They ended that streak with a win over Parkwood Jan. 18.
Tuesday's victory wasn't decided until the final minutes.
The Pirates opened up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter, but the Mavericks battled back and cut the lead to two (62-60) on a 3-pointer by junior forward John Emezie with under two minutes to play.
Pirates senior forward Harrison River answered with a bucket on the other end, and the Pirates held on by knocking down free throws in the final minute.
"It feels good to beat Marvin Ridge," said Rivers. "We all came together as a team. We did our part offensively and defensively."
Rivers finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds and four blocks.
Two other Pirates scored in double figures, including senior guard Dallas Austin (12) and sophomore guard Frank Anthony (10).
"We try to get post touches to Harrison, and we know that good things happen when he gets touches on the block," said Rhodes. "One good thing about our team is that we really don't have a certain guy you can key on. We probably have five or six guys that can hit double digits on our team besides Harrison, so maybe we're a little hard to scout."
Porter Ridge ends the regular season with a home game against Sun Valley on Friday. The Pirates will then compete in the SCC tournament next week.
"I've been telling our guys for months that we can play with anybody that's on our schedule," said Rhodes. "Now maybe they believe me."
