Trailing by eight points with less than six minutes left, it looked like Marvin Ridge High’s boys were headed for defeat.
But the Mavericks (6-4) showed a lot of fight, and rallied past Charlotte Latin (8-2) for a 56-53 win that propels the Mavs into today’s championship game at 5:30 p.m. on the campus of Charlotte Catholic.
The Mavericks were down eight (44-36) with 5:41 left in the game at 44-36, and Latin was still up seven (46-39) with 3:55 to play before Marvin Ridge reeled off six straight points.
Mavs senior wing Taylor Neal tied the game at 48-all with a 3-pointer at the 2:10 mark of the fourth quarter.
Junior forward John Emezie was clutch down the stretch, when the two teams traded the lead several times.
Emezie put his team up two with 1:17 left before the Hawks regained the lead on Adam Herrmann’s 3-pointer.
Logan Jackson put Marvin Ridge back on top with a driving layup with 51 seconds left, then Latin’s Joe Baynard hit two free throws with 25.6 left to retake lead.
Emezie responded with a drive for a layup with 15 seconds left, giving Marvin Ridge a 54-53 advantage.
Emezie then snatched a defensive rebound and was fouled. He made both free throws with 5.1 seconds left for a three-point cushion.
Emezie scored a team-high 16 points while Neal and David Kelcy added 15 each.
Neal made three 3-pointers and also had eight rebounds.
“We came off two hard losses to East Meck and Cuthbertson and we had to try to find ourselves again,” Neal said. “We’re getting back to the basics.”
Marvin Ridge reached the semifinals by defeating Forsyth Country Day, 54-44, on Friday.
“I don’t know if we’re playing that well but we’re getting better,” said Marvin Ridge coach Gosnell White. “We had a tough schedule and I think it’s starting to pay off for us.
“Defensively, I thought we played well. Obviously we have to shoot the ball better. Normally that’s what we’re known for.”
