Panthers fall short in title game
It was even for three quarters, but Cardinal Gibbons outscored Piedmont 20-4 in the fourth in a 52-36 win in the championship game of the Holy Angels Basketball Classic held at Charlotte Catholic Saturday afternoon.
Cardinal Gibbons was clinging to a 19-17 lead at halftime, and Piedmont tied the game at 32 on sophomore guard Jessica Purser’s layup with two seconds left in the third quarter.
But Cardinal Gibbons, out of Raleigh, pulled away in the final quarter.
The Crusaders, now 8-2, defeated Porter Ridge (51-37) in the first round and edged Charlotte Catholic (47-45) in the semifinals.
Morgan Reid was named tournament MVP after scoring 18 in the final, and teammate Stephanie Girard scored a game-high 19.
Piedmont was led by junior guard Jessica Prince, who had 11 points and three steals. The Panthers also got double digits from sophomore post Jackie Price, who scored 10.
Prince scored in double digits in all three tournament games, averaging 11.7 points. Junior guard Abbey Mills averaged 11 points and Price averaged 9.3.
Prince and Mills were selected to the all-tournament team.
Piedmont, which started 1-4, is now 4-6 on the season heading into Christmas break.
The Panthers return to action on Jan. 4 with a home game against Central Academy.
