Union County has 23 wrestlers ranked in state
Near the midpoint of the season, six Union County wrestlers have one loss or less on their record.
Piedmont senior Parker Von Egidy is 24-0 in his campaign for a third straight state championship.
Von Egidy brought home golds at the Tiger Holiday Classic and WRAL Wrestling Tournament during the holidays in which he defeated the highly-ranked Colburn of Croatan.
Andrew Colburn, who he defeated 19-9 at the WRAL Dec. 22, is ranked third at 182 pounds in 2A and Kyle, the older of the two, lost to Von Egidy 7-2 last Saturday at the Tiger Holiday Classic at 195 pounds.
Kyle is ranked number one in the state at 195 pounds.
Porter Ridge senior 220 Patrick Phillips is the only other undefeated with significant mat time this season with a 24-0 record as well.
Phillips went 5-0 at Mallard Creek over the weekend and is ranked ninth at 220 in 4A on retrorankings.com.
There are just four one-loss wrestlers left after Phillips and Von Egidy and three wrestle for Sun Valley.
Junior 132 Billy Benfield has kept his hot start going with a 28-1 record and is ranked seventh in his weight class.
Benfield’s only loss so far was an 8-5 decision to top-ranked Jake Deangelo of Southern Alamance Dec. 22.
Senior 138 Brian Inouye has posted a 27-1 record for the Spartans but has yet to be ranked. His only loss (3-2) is against Ben Litton of Charlotte Catholic, who is ranked seventh in 3A.
The last Spartan with one loss is senior 182 Michael Macchiavello, who is on a 15-match win streak since his 3-2 loss to Von Egidy. Macchiavello is ranked atop the 4A state poll among 182 pounders.
Piedmont senior 160 Dylan Nelson is 26-1 and ranked number one in 2A. Nelson is the defending state champion.
Nelson’s lone loss was to Adrian Soto-Perez of Scotland County — the top ranked 160 in 4A — at the WRAL tournament in the finals.
The county has 17 other ranked wrestlers, including top ranked Alex Ortiz of Central Academy at 145 pounds in 1A, and Cody Walker of Cuthbertson at 126 pounds in 2A.
Central Academy and Piedmont have the most ranked wrestlers with five apiece and they are also the only schools ranked in the tournament team polls. The Panthers are tied for sixth in 2A and the Cougars are ranked seventh in the 1A poll.
Piedmont is the only county team ranked in the dual team polls at third in the 2A classification. The defending 2A state champions are 11-1 after the first half.
Croatan and North Surry, who the Panthers fell to in their only loss so far, are ranked one and two respectively.
