Redhawks sweep Spartans in season opener

Monroe girls cruise; Roddy scores 23 for MHS boys

Monroe High's girls basketball team opened the season with a flurry, jumping out to a 16-3 lead on the way to a 74-29 home win over Sun Valley on Monday.
The Redhawks were never challenged, leading 34-16 at halftime.
Monroe got several impressive performances.
Junior wing Asha Jordan had game-highs of 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists off the bench to lead the Redhawks. Senior guard Daya Jordan, her older sister, had eight points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals.
Monroe also got a big game from senior center Zasha Barrett, who had 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Bria Roddy had 12 points on the strength of three 3-pointers and also grabbed five rebounds, and Aimee Bell scored nine on three triples of her own to bolster the bench scoring.
Sun Valley's Ke'la Thomas had eight points and seven rebounds, both team-highs, while teammates Amanda Bill and Rachel Terrell scored seven each.
The Spartans, now 4-6, host Providence High today.
Monroe, the last Union County school to start its season, plays three times this week and next. The Redhawks are at Porter Ridge on Wednesday before traveling to Anson County on Friday.

Monroe boys 52, Sun Valley 44
Brandon Roddy made all six of his free throw attempts in the fourth quarter as Monroe's boys held off Sun Valley in the Redhawks' season-opener.
Roddy, a junior shooting guard, made his last seven free throws after starting out 3-of-6 from the foul line.
Roddy scored a game-high 23 points and made three of his team's six 3-pointers.
Junior guard Dikembe White had 12 points and four steals, and senior forward Tristan Thompson had a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench for Monroe. Thompson scored his six points on three tip-ins.
The Redhawks, coming off a 19-11 season that included a trip to the 1A state quarterfinals, took a 26-21 lead into halftime. They pushed the lead out to 11 points in the third quarter and entered the fourth up nine (40-31).
Sun Valley (5-5) got another double-double from senior forward Kendall Ratliff, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Jacquez Johnson had eight points, five rebounds and three steals and teammate Isaiah Blanchett finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
The loss ended the Spartans' three-game winning streak.

NOTE: Monroe and Sun Valley start their quarterbacks on the basketball team, but both missed the game with an injury. Monroe's Quay Chambers is recovering from a separated shoulder while the Spartans' Kevin Saxton sat out with a knee injury.
