Marvin Ridge girls earn first league win
Marvin Ridge's girls earned their first victory in the Southern Carolina Conference with a 48-34 home win over Sun Valley on Friday.
The Mavericks improved to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Spartans fell to 5-11 overall and 0-3 in the SCC.
Sun Valley held a one-point advantage at the break (21-20), but Marvin Ridge outscored the visitors 28-13 in the second half to pull away. The Mavericks entered the game averaging just 31.9 points on the season.
The Mavs got a game-high 15 points from junior wing Melissa Blatnik, who also pulled down five rebounds.
Jamie Ellis, a junior guard, scored all 14 of her points in the second half, including nine in the third quarter. It was Ellis' top scoring performance of the season, besting her 10-point effort in a loss to Nation Ford.
Senior forward Alyssa Horan grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored seven points for Marvin Ridge, and freshman guard Julianna Bass added eight points off the bench.
Sun Valley got a team-high 10 points from senior guard Amanda Bill.
Lauren Eisenburger, a sophomore guard, contributed eight points off the bench for the Spartans, who also got eight rebounds and seven points from junior forward Ke'La Thomas.
Both teams play again on Tuesday, when Sun Valley travels to Parkwood and Marvin Ridge hosts Anson County.
