Chambers' double-double lifts Redhawks

Senior forward has 19 points, 13 boards in win over CATA

Central Academy's boys have shown improvement this season with wins over Forest Hills, Porter Ridge and Parkwood, but the Cougars were no match for Monroe High on Friday.

The Redhawks led by just two at halftime, but outscored the home team 18-5 in the third quarter on the way to a 55-37 win.

Monroe is now 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the Rocky River Conference after winning back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

"We were able to get into our press," Redhawks coach Johnny Sowell said of the decisive third quarter. "When you don't make free throws it's hard to press. You miss jump shots, it's hard to press. Once we started going to the bucket and getting layups we were able to press. That picked the tempo up a little more and we wanted to pick it up."

Senior forward Quay Chambers was the driving force for the Redhawks, recording game-highs with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Chambers scored nine of his 19 in the third quarter.

The Cougars (6-8, 2-4 RRC) hit three of their 3-pointers in the first half and led late, but Monroe scored the final four points of the second quarter for a 23-21 lead at the break.

Quay Threatt, a sophomore who is already a two-sport varsity standout, scored eight of his team-high 12 points in the first half for CATA.

The Redhawks controlled the boards all night and finished plus-16 (40-24) in that department.

Brandon Roddy scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Redhawks.

The Redhawks went through most of the week of practice without Sowell after the recent death of his father.

Assistant coach David Presson ran practice until Sowell got back Thursday.

"We had a gameplan and coach (David) Presson took over working on some things we need to improve on," Sowell said. "Getting up and down the floor was number one, actively breaking down the offense was number two. When I got there Thursday, we just went through our routine."

Central Academy will try to pick up its third conference win Tuesday at archrival Union Academy.

Monroe will be at home against archrival Forest Hills on Tuesday.
