MONROE — Two of the top girls high school basketball teams in Union County square off when Weddington travels to Parkwood tonight.
The contest marks the Southern Carolina Conference opener for both teams. The Warriors, who have won seven straight, are off to a 10-3 start while the Rebels have an overall record of 8-1.
Parkwood’s lone loss came to Weddington in the semifinals of the Cox Mill Holiday Classic on Dec. 28, when the Warriors got 37 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore guard Stephanie Watts on their way to a 52-38 victory.
Tonight’s game features the top two scorers in Union County, including Watts and Rebels junior forward Emry Tsitouris.
Watts leads UC at 21.5 points per game while Tsitouris is second at 20.6 ppg. Tsitouris also leads the county in rebounding with an average of 15.2 per game.
The other SCC openers tonight include Porter Ridge at Marvin Ridge and Sun Valley at Anson County.

RRC race heating up
Teams from the Rocky River Conference have a chance to either create some distance or improve their rank in the standings this week.
On the boys side, Cuthbertson is currently in first place at 3-0 in the league following last Friday’s thrilling 64-63 road win over Monroe.
The Cavaliers travel to Central Academy today before finishing up the week at home against Forest Hills on Friday.
Piedmont is second in the league at 2-0, followed by Forest Hills (2-1) and Monroe (1-1).
The Panthers travel to FH today and play at Monroe on Wednesday.
Forest Hills’ girls lead the standings with a 3-0 mark, just ahead of archrival Monroe (2-0). Cuthbertson (2-1) is the only other team with a winning record in the league.
The Yellow Jackets and Redhawks still have two regular season meetings scheduled on Jan. 22 (at Monroe) and Feb. 15 (at Forest Hills).
