Porter Ridge High’s girls built a double-digit halftime lead and held on to defeat Weddington 47-41 on Tuesday in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Southern Carolina Conference.

Porter Ridge, which has won seven straight, is now 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the SCC. The Warriors, who fell to 3-1 and 13-4, had their Union County-best 10-game winning streak snapped.

The Pirates pulled away in the second quarter, when they scored 14 points and held the Warriors to just one.

Porter Ridge carried a 27-15 lead into halftime, led by Jada Huntley’s nine points. Huntley finished with a team-high 17.

Stephanie Watts scored nine points in the first half, but the rest of the Warriors combined for just six points before the break.

Weddington got back in the game by scoring the last five points of the third quarter to cut PR’s lead to 33-26, but could get no closer than five points of the lead in the fourth.

Watts, a sophomore who entered the game averaging a county-best 22.3 points per game, finished with 19 points.

Porter Ridge hasn’t lost in more than a month (Dec. 20). Before Tuesday, the Warriors had not tasted defeat since Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7).

The Warriors are back in action today with a non-conference home game against Forestview, while the Pirates host Marvin Ridge on Friday.
