Charlotte Christian dominated for nearly three quarters in a 28-19 win over Sun Valley in Memorial Stadium Thursday night.
The Knights built a 21-0 lead at halftime. Quarterback Austin Kendall led the way, throwing two touchdown passes and running for another before the break.
Kendall, a sophomore, transferred after starting at QB for Cuthbertson in 2012.
While Kendall marched CC  up and down the field, the Spartans (0-1) failed to get a first down in the first half.
Sun Valley rallied with 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. Junior tailback Albert Funderburk had a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans on the board. Sun Valley cut the lead to 28-13 when Ryan Tapp threw a TD pass to Courtland Stoudt.
Funderburk scored in the final two minutes of the game on a screen pass that covered 84 yards.
The Spartans are playing for new head coach Paul Hall, who replaced Scott Stein (now at Myers Park).
The Spartans host Hoke County in Week 2 while the Knights are also at home, taking on Hammond out of South Carolina.
