Redhawks cruise in opener

Sophomore QB Zeph Wall accounted for four touchdowns in the second quarter as Monroe pulled away en route to a 50-7 home win over Lexington on Friday.
Wall scored on runs of 21, 50 and 13 yards in the second quarter, then hit junior Jaylen Nixon for a 17-yard TD with 5 seconds left in the half to give the Redhawks (1-0) a 44-7 advantage at the break.
Wall rushed five times for 110 yards and tailback Chase Byrum gained 156 yards on 20 carries. Byrum scored on a 22-yard run in the first quarter, and backfield mate Jacquies Alsobrooks put Monroe on the board first with a 13-yard scoring run. Jaqavis Allen scored from 3 yards out with 24 seconds left in the game, capping a 99-yard drive by the reserve unit.

Junior free safety Desmen Robinson had two interceptions for the Redhawks. Monroe's defense held Lexington to negative yards on offense. The Yellow Jackets rushed 26 times for minus 74 yards and had 29 passing yards.

Monroe accumulated 515 rushing yards on 50 carries and finished with 574 yards of offense. Monroe plays at Anson County in Week 2.
