The race for the boys scoring title in Union County is down to two players.

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, Cuthbertson High junior guard Shelton Mitchell and Monroe junior guard Brandon Roddy have separated themselves from the rest of the pack.

Mitchell, who has committed to Wake Forest, leads UC with an average of 22.6 points per game. Roddy is just behind at 21.9 ppg.

Mitchell has scored in double figures in all 15 games he's appeared in this season. He's eclipsed 20 points eight times and has four 30-point games, including a season-high 34 in a win over Forest Hills on Jan. 11.

The 6-foot-3 left-hander finished second in the county in scoring (23.6 ppg) as a sophomore.

Mitchell and the Cavs (16-1, 7-0 RRC) have seven games left in the regular season, starting with a home game against North Stanly on Tuesday.

Roddy has scored 20 or more eight times, including a career-high 35 in a win over Porter Ridge on Dec. 12.

The 6-foot combo guard has helped the Redhawks to an 11-3 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the RRC.

Monroe has eight regular season games remaining, including a road matchup with Piedmont on Tuesday.

Tops on the glass

Piedmont's Cameron Tripp continues to be the top rebounder in the county by a healthy margin.

A 6-foot-6 sophomore, Tripp is averaging 9.1 rebounds per game. The next closest rebounder in the county is Monroe senior Quayshawn Chambers (7.7 rpg).

Tripp has seven double-digit rebounding games in 2012-13. He's pulled down a career-high 14 boards on two occasions in wins over Weddington and Monroe.

The Panthers are 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the RRC, and trail Cuthbertson by a game in the league standings.

Odds and ends ...

... Monroe has the top three steal leaders in the county, including Roddy (3.3), senior guard Dikembe White (2.6) and junior guard Tre Shun Wynn (2.3).

... Marvin Ridge seniors Taylor Neal and John Emezie each made five 3-pointers in last Tuesday's home win over Anson County. Neal leads the team in scoring at 17.0 ppg while Emezie is second at 16.4 ppg.

... Two players in the county are averaging better than five assists per game, including Sun Valley senior Kevin Saxton (5.7) and Marvin Ridge senior Logan Jackson (5.1).
